In analogy to the widely used CHEST PAIN UNITS, the EFVM advocates the establishment of so-called LIMB PAIN UNITS (leg pain ambulances). These are established at maximum care hospitals and university hospitals.
Although there are vascular centres nationwide, which bring together the clinics for vascular surgery, for angiology and for radiology with the corresponding degree of certification. In everyday life, however, is seems to be that this cooperation does not always work optimally – because of professional conflicts among other things. Therefore the interdisciplinary treatment of vascular patients still remains a challenge. The LIMB PAIN UNIT unites the cardiological, angiological and vascular surgery departments and examines patients with any extremity symptoms by means of vascular medicine. By doing so, the LIMB PAIN UNITS should lead to an improvement of the vascular medical care in metropolitan and non-metropolitan regions.
